Sarah shut the record and stashed it. Patra wrote no clues in the book, and she was nowhere to be found. Slim fingers tapped the desk, then a nod. She stepped into The Boogey, empty in the hour after dawn, and stood, facing the storm.

“Lord Hades, I petition with a question.”

His chill arrived a second before he did, and he lounged against the bar. “Keeper. This is unexpected.”

“Patra has vanished. Do you have her?”

“Straight to the point, I see. You need to work on your pleasantries.”

“I’ll make that my peacetime priority,” Sarah said. “Patra?”

“Not in the Underworld. I received an influx of unplanned humans, but that’s tapering. Based on the missing parts, I suspect the chimera ate them. Not the most trainable of monsters.”

“For now, not our problem. I wish I could see this storm the way Patra does.”

“I‘d avoid vocalizing every random thought that strolls across your brain, Keeper. Especially those involving Uranus.” His long fingers drummed the bar’s top, and Hecate shimmered into view.

“Keeper Patra is not here. I don’t have her, and the other side hasn’t sent crowing messages of glee over snatching her. Thoughts?”

Hecate’s torch pointed toward the ceiling. “The lights of Eros were seen on Olympus. No idea if those events are related. However, now that we’ve united with the humans, shouldn’t we be planning our attack?”

“Sure, if losing is the goal,” Sarah interrupted, earning a glare. “We have to persuade each race to vote to join us. Beating the crap out of them and killing friends and allies won’t get that accomplished. We saw how combining our strengths allowed us to succeed, where using a single race’s plan failed. Why not build on that success?”

Hecate’s glare continued unabated and Sarah let the silence stretch, before dropping to her knees. “Forgive my bluntness, goddess. I meant no disrespect, but my point stands. I believe you are the perfect choice to outline and conduct the approach to the fae, a wise nation rooted deep in the creation’s beginning. While you’re more closely aligned with the witches who followed, the fae were your first children. What do you suggest we try to attract their interest in joining our side?”

“Me?” Hecate’s tone dripped bitterness. “Flitana blamed me for abandoning them. I am hated. You are puny and cannot understand the pain of tens of centuries.”

“Pain is universal, goddess. Flitana lies among the fallen, waiting for redemption. Mighty Hecate, were you at fault, even in a minor way, for the rift? Could an apology open a door?”
